Week1: September 5, 2006
Mount the canvas on the stretcher bars ensuring that the canvas is evenly tight. Locate
and mark with a pin, the center hole of the canvas.
Beginning with the center
diamond and your color corresponding to the chart's Fuchsia, a
nchor your
thread with an 'away waste knot' on the top of the work approximately 2 inches SE
(down and to the right) of the center hole. Stitch the center small diamond in quarters
with five satin stitches increasing from the first stitch by one on each side. Always work
the satin stitches in a quarter in the same direction or you will lose the effect of light on
the direction of the twist in the thread. Work one quarter at a time- the SE quarter is
first. The first stitch should begin one thread down from the center hole and finish one
thread to the right of the center hole - the stitch goes diagonally over one canvas thread
intersection. Each successive stitch begins and ends in-line with this first stitch. Try to
trap your 'away waste knot' thread on the back with your stitches. To begin the second
quarter pass your thread down through the back of your stitches and begin the SW
quarter. Continue around the diamond with the NW quarter and then the NE quarter.
End your thread on the back by running through the back of the stitches. Leave a tail of
1/2-1 inch to be trapped under later diamonds.
Select your thread color corresponding to the chart's Purple and work the diamonds each
side of this center, one at a time. Work the diamonds above and below this center with
the same color. Work similar diamonds in-between these with your equivalent of the
chart's French Blue. Note that there are only four satin stitches on the sides touching
already worked diamonds and 5 on the outer exposed edges.
